Where Soldiers Come From – A Film by Heather Courtney

Where Soldiers Come From

Heather Courtney graduated from film school at UT in Austin and remained there becoming part of the local filmmaking community. Her first documentary shot in Texas, “Letters From the Other Side”, was co-edited by Kyle Henry, a well-established editor and director from Austin and also co-produced by UT alums Megan Gilbride and David Hartstein. The next doc was “Los Trabajadores” shot in Mexico. Both films received awards and accolades. Courtney comes from a rural part of Michigan and always had a feeling that rural America has been portrayed in TV and movies as geographically and culturally isolated. With this in mind, she headed to her home state to a small town in northern Michigan and started working on her next film, “Where Soldiers Come From”. This is an important film about how the war in Iraq and Afghanistan has impacted families from America, especially the smaller towns across the country. Families here in the Valley know this too well.

“Where Soldiers Come From” will be screened in Austin on October 12, 13 and 15 with Q&A by Heather Courtney after each screening. The soldiers profiled in the film will be attending October 13 and 15 at the Alamo Drafthouse – Lamar.
