An eight-year walk.
Honduras to Mexico City to South Texas.
A backpack and an aura.
A goal, though he’d reject the word: Montreal.
He walks north.
Easy steps, smooth steps, often more strides than steps.
He raises a finger.
The southeast wind grazes the extension.
“The wind moves me.”

Eugene “Gene” Novogrodsky, a Brownsville resident for nearly three decades, writes North American border slices, from eastern Canada to central Mexico, and in between.
