“Mexico and the Valley, a revolving door”
McALLEN, Dec. 16 – I spent a better part of the past week wondering about the border lands in this part of the world that I choose to call home.
I visited some places that I have always frequented and some that because of their distance and/or infamy I have chosen to avoid in the past year. Along the banks of the Rio Grande, whether you dare to cross into Mexico anymore or just stand on your side of the river and look across, two things are very evident: Hurricane Alex and its backwaters left their mark on the communities of both Tamaulipas and South Texas; and the accelerated cartel violence beginning last February have profoundly changed the face and fabric of communities on either side of the river.
