The Border After Bin Laden

After the attacks of 911. a lot of things changed, and are still changing. There was talk of shutting down the border, curiously mostly the Mexican Border with the US, not the Canadian. The Patriot Act sprung full blown out of the Security State, with the same alacrity that the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Minerva, had sprung from the head of Zeus.
Afghanistan and Iraq were quickly invaded, but the border was not immediately shut down. If there had been an army of Al Quaidas waiting on our doorstep they would have been here in time for lunch. What did happen was a steady outpouring of mean-spirited laws and red tape and regulation, directed against Mexico and the American Public.

Of course Muslims were scrutinized, their immigration status gone over with a fine tooth comb, and many were treated with questionable legality at best. Now sometime later it’s been admitted that there were no credible domestic threats at the time of serious terror attacks. But the Patriot Act moved on against every facet of American freedom, and the regulations and laws against travelers, Mexicans, people of Mexican descent have continued to this day.

Now with the killing of Osama Bin Laden by the United States, a new focus will be placed on terrorism. Along the Rio Grande again we could be in the crosshairs.
