So You Want To Be A Saint?

(after Charles Bukowski’s “So you want to be a writer?”)

If you are not willing
to die
to self
to surrender the “I”

turn away.

If the quiet scares you
afraid you might hear His voice
and you are not ready
to respond

turn away.

If you insist on control
your grasp too tight

let go.

You need moxie to aim for sainthood,
courage to bare
what you were,
willing to remain sober,
willing to embrace the high,
the ecstasy of a full surrender.

Are you prepared to walk in the dark,
to bare the jewels promised,
the excesses craved by the I?

We may all be called,
but we may not be ready.

Sainthood does not attract
the ordinary, the comfort seeker,
the slacker.

So, you want to be a saint?

Will you turn away,
live the lie?

Or will you surrender
the “I’?
