Small Heel

A small black heel,
Off a small shoe,
Off a small foot,
She does have a ride
And she relates
How it is to work
Streets from when she
Leaves the kids at school
Until she picks them up ….

About seven hours for the
Streets, with her cell on,
The man home, checking on
Her, making sure she’s
Safe, bringing money,
Keeping the kids’ hours
Fresh, as the school
And teachers want her
On time, and as for her
Work, just work, get the kids ….

And there is more,
When in trouble she calls him
And he saves her and gets
Her pay, and he also has other
Plans for more money,
Once the kids are home,
Dropped at a friend’s ….

The heel –
Must have come off
When she told
About work, words
Out of a bruised face,
Words below dirty hair ….

About Gene Novogrodsky

Eugene “Gene” Novogrodsky has lived in the Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville for 21 years. He is a co-founder of the Narciso Maritinez Cultural Arts Center Writers Forum in San Benito. He says he has rarely been published; he fears rejection! Instead he loves to read his work in Savory Perks, in the Writers forum, and the Valley International Poetry Festival events. What he enjoys most is reading to several friends, or even strangers in small groups. He is married to his friend and companion, Ruth E. Wagner, who is also a poet and craftsperson. He does write letters to both print and online publications and has been a good friend to Writers of the Rio Grande.
