The City That Feeds Us

Grocery money, as well as any other money in Juarez these days is often obtained at the end of a gun barrel. Still there is real business going on ….If the situation worsens there will be no above ground economy. Or perhaps the auto parts, batteries, and cheaply assembled goods will be escorted out by armed convoys. The future does not look too bright.

Juarez, Mexico is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Certainly in the developed third world with some infrastructure communications etc. it is. And in spite of the danger, American and Asian companies still have large maquiladores and manufacturing in Juarez and other border cities. So far the drug cartels have not targeted the foreign investors, but just working and crossing into a lawless city has enormous risk.
Rio Grande Valley Poet and author Brenda Nettles Riojas addresses this in a way I’ve not heard before.
