There are always voices murmuring through people. No matter how grand or humble, all have something inside that wants out, that cries out, that demands release. Just under the surface, or buried deep inside, it’s always there. Not that far away. Expression escapes through many exits, as when a woman cries in the night, or dies to her world, to her self and children and her love turns to dust along with her hopes…Or in the frustration that crescendos to curses, screams, slaps and punches…The man screaming at the night en su borrachera, howling verses of the corrido his father hurled with desafio (defiance) and de at a life he can not comprehend. He knows only that somehow, someway, the life that should have been his own, has been stolen. The thieves all have immunity….through their power, or deceit…and there are so many…which ones are to blame? They are beyond the reach of Justice. And love deflects all blame…It’s the most immune.
There is a poem or song or a rant or a scream inside one and all. The people should be getting out theirs. It would release a lot of tension.
Lady Mariposa lands us smack dab in the middle of despair, then raises herself (and us as well). Perhaps she knows the only triumph this world permits is within us. She has never given up. Until that surrender comes, there can be no defeat..
Like so many in the Rio Grande Valley her roots run beneath the river to Mexico, her leaves stretch far into America and it’s dream is her dream. The flower of her art blooms for us all. Life here on the border is bi-cultural and the currents do not cease their flow. Up from Mexico, down through Texas, The American Jazz, and thoughts and hopes, and more than the inventions and the arts…the sense that all is possible….maybe we just haven’t been beaten down enough.
The Jazz Beat, the Spanish flourish, the sex, the ethnic crisis, and the family…. nurturing, sheltering… Then in equal parts limits and imprisons a young girl body, heart, and mind.
It has not reached her soul
Like nothing you may have heard before
