Ibeyi consists of twin sisters Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz. Their father was Anga Diaz, the famed percussionist from Cuba who was a member of the Buena Vista Social Club where he jammed with Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González and Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz. When he passed away, the twins were 11 years old and began learning the cajon, the instrument their father played, and studied folk songs of Yoruba. Naomi plays percussion and Lisa plays the piano. They are 19 and have started recording their debut album which will be out in February, 2015.
Ibeyi sings in English and Yoruba, a Nigerian language that made it’s way to Cuba by slavery in the 1700’s. Here’s the video “River” published on Youtube August, 2014. Here’s a link to their website where you can pre-order the album.
