She put down her vegetable plate and said:
“My grandson went into the army today.”
Israeli army, compulsory service.
Then she picked up the plate and found some black beans.
Her grandson will be busy,
Killing, wounding, destroying,
And he can be killed, wounded and destroyed.
I wonder how many mothers and grandmothers,
From all over the Near and Middle East were telling
Friends, family and strangers the same about their sons and grandsons,
All omitting the possibilities.
