A Comparison, If Uneven

…was thinking how the Swiss and Swedes felt in late 1944 close to war.

See, they weren’t in war;

They were next to war,

The Swiss near the war in Germany;

The Swedes near the war in Norway.

As for me, here in Deep South Texas,

The dead pile in northern Tamaulipas,

Just across the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo,

And deeper in Mexico,

More dead in Veracruz and Guerrero.

Just wondering, as I said,

How those Swiss and Swedes felt years back,

So close to blood,

While they ate, read the papers, listened to the radio,

Slept, had children, drank coffee, even went skiing …

Maybe made some money off the gore,

Sometimes let fortunate refugees in ….
